Goodwin and Riptide.

We can look at the key principles of Goodwin's theory and how they apply to Riptide:
1) The relationship between lyrics and visuals.
2) There is a relationship between music and visuals. (The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music).
 ( Illustrate, amplify and disjuncture)
Illustrate – Music videos can use a set of images to illustrate the meaning of lyrics and genre. Amplify- The meanings of the song are added to by the visuals. The visual aspects add an extra layer of meaning.
Disjuncture- This is where the meaning of the song is completely ignored.
3) Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
4) The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work.
5) There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
6. There are often intertextual reference.


Music videos are normally catergorised as:


performance based ( watching the artist perform )
Narrative based showing a story
or Concept ( try peter Gabriele sledgehammer)

wide range of contrasting and juxtaposing shots used from seemingly disparate new and found footage.

Challenges typical codes and conventions of narrative
 Cuts link to the lyrics coherence of  narrative through links between symbolic and linguistic codes
Influences surrealist and avant-garde cinema ( such as luis Bunuel)


Subversion of video conventions
to confer uniqueness or enigma ( Barth)

Semiotics
signs signifiers signified
Lyric: ' Oh all my friends are turning green'
( green linked to money and greed and envy)


Cinematic features  of  films:
opening shot ,
billing ( credit block),
C and Cs of genres such as Westerns, 
Horror iconography
film references
